New Certification Initiative For Lab Grown Diamonds

New Certification Initiative For Lab Grown Diamonds
There are a multitude of independent grading and certification laboratories involved in the evaluation of natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds and coloured gemstones.
You can see more about these here Diamond Certification & Verification
When it comes to lab grown diamonds, it is the IGI which has led the way in creating a dependable grading and certification framework, dating back to when the industry was in it's infancy. This remains crucial, both for discerning customers and conscientious retailers alike.
At Pobjoy Diamonds, this provision of independent third-party evaluation of the diamonds we sell is central to our business ethos.
It is critical for customers to insist upon meaningful grading information when making a purchase. For larger carat weight stones (typically over 0.30 carats) do not accept a jewellers own certificate.
And be just as sceptical of a grading report supplied by an independent third party if it is not a respected institute.Â
In the case of natural mined diamonds the GIA retains the gold standard (pun intended) while the IGI ranks equally - if not a touch ahead - when it comes to the lab grown variety, both white and fancy coloured.
In both cases, this is due to their extensive global networks and to the consistancy and accuracy of their grading.
So when we hear of a new initiative for grading and certifying lab grown diamonds, our interest is piqued.
Written In Stone Eternally (WISE)
Just announced to the industry, their mission statement reads :
'As lab-grown diamonds gain popularity, navigating different claims and product offerings is daunting.
With a set criteria, based on industry principles, and with clear communication, the purpose is to provide clarity, to help retailers and consumers make an informed choice.'
From the information available so far, the WISE grading report has a reasonably familiar layout and key criteria of each stone described within it.Â
As with the IGI and GIA, the unique certification code within each diamond document can be verified for authenticity quickly and easily using their online platform. (links to these are included within our own website here).
So far so good. What is not yet evident however is if or how it is revolutionary or how it is intended to further increase transparency and integrity for both retailers and end users alike (as opposed to essentially just replacing what is already available).
One aspect of the initiative may lend a clue in this regard. WISE is inviting industry participants to become ambassadors and in so doing help shape the form and nature of the program as it evolves.
So for now we shall monitor developments with interest.
And should we become convinced of the integrity and consistancy of their grading, you can expect to see WISE certified lab grown diamonds within our online store in the very near future.
